Event 11.15.08\"><\/a><\/div><\/div><a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"perma-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thomasbachand.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/17\/rakestraw-books-111508\/\" title=\"Rakestraw Books &#8211; Event 11.15.08\"><\/a><input type=\"hidden\" name=\"rts_id\" class=\"rts_id\" value=\"24\" \/><input type=\"hidden\" id=\"rts_media_nonce\" name=\"rts_media_nonce\" value=\"6441772a63\" \/><input type=\"hidden\" name=\"_wp_http_referer\" value=\"\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24\" \/><\/div><p>Thanks to all who came out on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to hear me speak about my book <em>Lake Tahoe: A Fragile Beauty<\/em> at <a title=\"Rakestraw Books Danville\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rakestrawbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rakestraw Books<\/a> in Danville.\u00a0 One attendee was in the area two hours before the event began and chose to wait next door at Peet&#8217;s until the appointed hour!\u00a0 It is gratifying to see this work appreciated and I am flattered that people take such time to support and follow it.\u00a0 If you missed the event, Rakestraw has signed copies of the book on hand.<\/p>\n<p>Special acknowledgment to Michael Barnard at Rakestraw for hosting the event.\u00a0 Making an independent bookstore work is no easy task these days.\u00a0 Mike has a great store and puts together a continuing series of interesting speakers.\u00a0 He is an important member of the Danville community.\u00a0 I encourage everyone to drop by and, if you&#8217;re further afield, check out his <a title=\"Rakestraw Books Danville\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rakestrawbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\">web site and newsletter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;m on the subject of independent booksellers, an interesting film was aired on KQED&#8217;s Truly CA this weekend.\u00a0 <a title=\"film by filmmaker Alex Beckstead\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kqed.org\/arts\/programs\/trulyca\/episode.jsp?epid=160084\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Paperback Dreams<\/em><\/a> by filmmaker <a title=\"Filmmaker Alex Beckstead\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kqed.org\/arts\/programs\/trulyca\/profile.jsp?essid=23180\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Beckstead<\/a> chronicles the history of such notable Bay Area booksellers as Kepler&#8217;s and Cody&#8217;s, and the difficulties they face in today&#8217;s marketplace &#8211; despite the important part they play in our communities.\u00a0 While large Internet retailers are able to pass along their savings as virtual retailers, big box stores often sell books as a loss leader.\u00a0 Many smaller booksellers are finding success on the Internet targting special interests or rare and out-of-print books<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the Internet and the big retailers are doing more than changing the way we purchase books.\u00a0 Reading a 400 page book is quite different than trolling for information on the Internet.\u00a0 Information begets knowledge and knowledge begets wisdom.\u00a0 Hopefully we&#8217;re not moving in the opposite direction.\u00a0 More on this phenomenon can be found in the July issue of the Atlantic in <a title=\"The Atlantic Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/doc\/200807\/google\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Is Google Making Us Stoopid?<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When you support your local bookstore you support good local jobs, community, intellectual vigor, and ideas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"rtsocial-container rtsocial-container-align-right rtsocial-horizontal\">\n<div class=\"rtsocial-twitter-horizontal\">\n<div class=\"rtsocial-twitter-horizontal-button\"><a title= \"Tweet: Rakestraw Books &#8211;
